One of the first steps when deciding to build
your web site should be the selection of a good
domain name. Domain names are used by your customers
to locate you on the web; for example, a large
site like Microsoft uses www.microsoft.com. Just
like these big companies, you too will also need
to have your own domain name in order for prospective
customer to locate you on the web. The popular
domain name extension ends in from .com, .org,
.net.
.com - Commercial Sites
.org - Organization and Non-Profit Groups
.net - Usually ISP (Internet Service Provider)
.edu - Education
.gov - Government
Although, there have been quiet a few exception
to how these extension are being in business today.
For example, extensions that were once thought
of for only ISP are now being used by other companies
who are not ISP.
